14:00 - 15:00Hydrogen as energy carrier of the future – Is thermodynamics prepared to deliver the required data?

Prof. Roland Span from Ruhr University Bochum will speak on Monday, January 5, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at BI on the topic "Hydrogen as energy carrier of the future – Is thermodynamics prepared to deliver the required data?".

Prof. Span is a leading expert in the field of thermodynamics and physical properties of substances, known in particular for his contribution to the development of accurate Helmholtz-type equations of state. He works at Ruhr-Universität Bochum, where he has long led research focused on experimental and theoretical thermodynamics of pure substances and mixtures. He is the co-author of several key international standards (e.g., equations of state for CO₂, helium, and hydrogen), and his work has a significant impact on industry and international metrology. As part of the ThermoPropHy project, which has received support from the European Research Council (ERC), he plans to measure the thermodynamic properties of hydrogen (e.g., density and speed of sound)…
