Prof. Span is a leading expert in the field of thermodynamics and physical properties of substances, known in particular for his contribution to the development of accurate Helmholtz-type equations of state. He works at Ruhr-Universität Bochum, where he has long led research focused on experimental and theoretical thermodynamics of pure substances and mixtures. He is the co-author of several key international standards (e.g., equations of state for CO₂, helium, and hydrogen), and his work has a significant impact on industry and international metrology.
