The course focuses on practical management of the most common life-threatening conditions that any of us may encounter in everyday life. Participants will learn the correct procedure for finding an unconscious person, how to effectively call emergency medical services, and the basics of cardiopulmonary resuscitation, including the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED). The course also covers dealing with massive bleeding, choking on a foreign object, and practical training in the use of an Epipen auto-injector.

The course also provides an overview and recognition of the symptoms of serious acute illnesses such as stroke, myocardial infarction, epileptic seizure, and hypoglycemic shock. Emphasis is placed on practical training, quick decision-making, and gaining confidence that participants will be able to provide proper assistance in an emergency situation without unnecessary delay.
